Chapter 2, Cover

aaaa

God you have no idea how long I’ve been internally screaming waiting to get to this. I hope you appreciate how annoying it was to build a site where all of the static colors would work on two completely contrasting backgrounds. Many thanks again to Lowell for figuring out all my stupid requests and helping to build the best comic site everrrrrr

Next page will be up on Thurs since covers are cool!! but also lame!!!! And more good news: It is July, and as foretold by ancient prophecies, I will be going fulltime on my comics starting ASAP. So there will be a minimum of 3x updates (spread between MI and The Meek) every week. Maybe a little spotty at first as I get a good pace built up but I am so excited to finally be doing what I love as much as I can, for the moment at least! Once the Patreon is set up I’ll have an idea of exactly how sustainable this crazy plan is, haha.

And in case you missed it, last months’ incentives were updated at the Facebook.

Today’s bonus art: closeup

See you Thursday~

    Amazing cover! I’m so excited.

  • Max

oh my GOD/. I’m literally at a loss for words for how beautiful this page is. But I will say that it portrays such a great emotion when you consider all the previous pages.

  • ln

After seeing your comment on the color schemes i went back to the archive to see and was super impressed at how you put that all together. I’M EXCITED AND SCARED FOR THIS CHAPTER

The splash of water (or air under the water? Watchamacallit?) also somewhat resembles a human figure. Or am I reading too much into this?
Though I’m definitely reading too much into this comic, it’s just so good and it’s got me hooked!

    • Jojo

No, I think you’re right. It does resemble a human silhouette to me too.

  • Spav

    I love the new background!

Get ready to have money given to you. Not a whole lot, because I have to eat something other than eggs, but a reasonable amount.

    • shingworks

      eggssssss

I eat on a tight budget too, for cheap protein its hard to beat tofu :] if you are into that, haha

      • Jojo

Tofu is all about prep and type. At least in my experience. I love it.

  • I’m so excited for this chapter.

    Beautiful splash page (literally).

The pacing leading up to this scene was so good. Full of tension, and deeply human.

  • Intile

I am SO excited. This is my favorite still updating comic on the web((Rest in peace Pictures for Sad Children)). It’s gonna be great to see it moving at a faster pace. From the writing, the characters, the art, the atmosphere/setting, the various subject matters, and all the little attention to detail, it’s all great. I’m gonna have to figure out how patreon works so I can pledge to that so you can keep doin’ what you’re doing!

  • BoomBaby

    Let the prophecy be fulfilled!

  • An Average Loser

    Transition.

  • Unclever title

An underground ocean on Mars? Intriguing idea.

    • Vert

      Mike must’ve fallen over 6km!

      • shingworks

“Watch out for that first step, it’s a doozy.”

  • Yup, this is going to be good. Reeeal good.

  • Woohoo!

  • Localized

    MARS CONFIRMED FOR WET.

  • That is one beautiful cover, though.

  • madock345

Holy hell that’s pretty. I want to make the Vote Incentive bonus art thing my wallpaper. Not on my computer, I already put it on my computer. I mean my actual wallpaper. In my house.

    You better sell prints!

  • coffeeshopgirl

sooooooo “Mare Internum” translates to “the internal sea”, am I correct…? :) meaning this’s gotta be a big ole important chapter, yeah….? :)) *excitement*

  • Chiyo

The symbolism!! *-* Der-Shing, this is awesome.

  • Glenn-o-matic

If there were no seas on Earth we would never have conjectured or surmised anything.

    • shingworks

Lol, nobody likes a smartass XD

  • You know? When I was looking at the previous page, I already expected this will be the next! Great!

  • THE TRANSITION FROM THE LAST PAGE TO THIS ONE IS SOOOOOO GOOOD I’M SO PUMPED UP AUUUUGGHHHHHH

  • GreenArcher

Fantastic page. Also, as a long-time reader of ‘hard’ science fiction, I find this comic a real pleasure to read.

  • fox-orian

WE GOT MOOD LIGHTING ALL UP IN HERE.

    Hit that dimmer switch.

  • elliebot

<3 congrats at being fantastic a what you do.

    this is wonderful:DD

  • rain_of_stars

Just wanted to say congratulations, Der-shing! I know you’ve been looking forward to having more free time, and I think it’s great that you’ve been able to produce so much art even when you’ve been swamped by work. You’ve done a great job, and I look forward to the rest of the story you’ve shared with us. Thank you!

  • Captain-Delirium

Oh man I love the transition from the previous page to the cover, it’s just beautiful and perfect

  • Ness

I really admire your effort in updating two comics every week. It’s a real treat for the readers of course, but I hope it’s a major success for you too! Looking forward to the new pages!

  • Matthew Saint

Reading that Ormsby Mitchel quote makes me think about the aliens from Signs. Expending great resources traveling light years to pillage/raid a planet only to find it covered with titanic quantities of a harmful substance. Maybe they just didn’t think something like that was possible if life existed on Earth.

Anywho, Mare is slowly making me more interested than The Meek which is quite the feat. Awesome!

    • shingworks

Haha, I read a review about Signs, which said that the movie was actually a story about demons on earth? which makes me like it a lot more. Kinda also explains how the water= damage thing they went with.

  • SotiCoto

    … So he isn’t dead? … =(

    Poor guy.

  • Frank

So happy to see a quote from Cincinnati’s hero of astronomy, Ormsby McKnight Mitchel. The guy was the Carl Sagan of the 1840s, and I am not saying that lightly! Read his book “The Planetary and Stellar Worlds”, and you will believe it.

  • Nyan

Ok this was one of the most beautiful scene cuts I have ever seen. In my entire life*. On a title page to boot! Wonderful! You’re a really amazing author, I can only imagine how much dedication and effort it took you to get to this level.

(* the fact that I really love water and diving probably makes me a little biased but that’s still my opinion)

  • Sheridan

OK, it’s only been about three years since I last read this comic (real life always gets in the way), but I just wanted to say how much I love love love your artwork! From the scenery to the individual character designs to the ‘hardware’ around and on them.
Now to gorge myself on the un-read pages.
